Overview
Safer alternatives to EtBr, SYBR® Safe, and others
Ethidium bromide (EtBr) has long been used for nucleic acid staining due to its affordability and sensitivity. However, its high mutagenicity makes handling and disposal costly. Safer alternatives exist, though each comes with trade-offs. SYBR® Safe offers low toxicity but reduced sensitivity, while SYBR® Green and SYBR® Gold provide good detection but lack stability. Other dyes, such as Midori Green and SafeView™, are less mutagenic but still cytotoxic.
Superior sensitivity and flexible applications
GelRed® and GelGreen® stand out as safer, highly sensitive options for DNA staining. GelRed® surpasses EtBr and SYBR® Gold in sensitivity and is available as a prestain loading dye. GelGreen®, spectrally similar to SYBR® Safe, is far more sensitive and compatible with blue light systems. PAGE GelRed® enables DNA staining in acrylamide gels. Both dyes match EtBr in stability and ease of use, and are also offered in pre-coated agarose formats, making them versatile and reliable choices for laboratories.
